Art and Design
Intent
‘Creativity takes courage.’
Henri Matisse
It is our intent at Bader Primary School to provide children with an ambitious, well-sequenced and progressive Art and Design curriculum that offers them the opportunity to be curious, creative and reflective whilst developing a diverse range of artistic skills, techniques and vocabulary.
Children will be determined to use their curiosity to explore and develop their ideas to produce creative work. All children will gain knowledge and appreciation of a variety of great art and artists allowing their own identity to evolve. They will aim high to develop their skills across a range of artistic disciplines including: drawing, painting, collage, sculpture and reflect upon their own work, demonstrating respect towards the work of others, including both peers and professional artists.
Implementation
Our Art and Design curriculum at Bader presents children with a range of opportunities to develop their skills in using a variety of materials, tools and techniques. The skills the children acquire are applied to their cross-curricular topics. As well as exploring the styles of influential artists that inspire our own artwork, it is equally important that children understand that art work is also a means of personal self-expression.
Pupils will follow the following sequence across Key Stage 1 and 2:
- Research
- Practise techniques
- Planning
- Make
- Evaluate
Early Years Foundation Stage
In the Early Years Foundation Stage at Bader presents children with a range of opportunities toexperiment with colour, design, texture, form and function, which are applied and translated to a range of outcomes which provide the opportunity to explore a range of creative concepts and visual responses.

Children will be introduced to a range of works by a variety of artists, craft makers and designers in order to describe the similarities and differences between different practices and disciplines, and make links to their own work.
Key Stage 2
In Art and Design in Key Stage 2 children develop the fundamental skills of drawing, painting and sculpture, all of which provide the opportunity to explore and evaluate a range of creative concepts and visual responses. Children will be introduced to a range of works by a variety of artists, architects and designers in order to widen their knowledge of art and design styles by focusing not only on well-known artists and designers but also less-familiar ones.
Impact
Art & Design at Bader Primary is high-quality, well thought out and planned to demonstrate progression and stimulate creativity. Children are expected to make good or better progress through keeping in alignment with our curriculum. We measure the impact of our curriculum through the following methods:
- Pupil’s written reflections and verbal discussions about their learning; which echoes their thoughts, ideas, processing and evaluations of work.
- A celebration of our pupils’ learning each term which demonstrates their progression across the year, evidenced in our sketchbooks.
All staff reflect on how well our Art & Design learning journey is being followed, in alignment with the progression of skills.
