In looking to capture deep and meaningful data around pupil, parent and carer, and teacher voice we are using the full suite of truly excellent Quaglia School Voice surveys, accessed through Corwin in the US.
For over 30 years, Dr. Russell Quaglia and his team at the Quaglia Institute for Student Aspirations have been collecting information about what education stakeholders think, believe, and feel about their schools. The data from these surveys has shown time and time again that certain conditions must be present in school for students to reach their fullest potential.
In capturing Pupil Voice we use the iKnow My Class Survey and the Student Voice Survey
The iKnow My Class Survey is designed to assess and address the conditions that inspire students to reach their fullest potential. It provides valuable information and formative assessment, which research acknowledges is essential for student growth and learning, to individual classroom teachers.
The survey is anonymous and teachers receive results in real time. iKnow My Class allows for ongoing, reporting of student perceptions and engagement and allows teachers to make necessary adjustments to teaching and learning plans. Teachers are encouraged to enhance the assessment by adding their own questions.
The Student Voice Survey is designed to measure the 8 Conditions That Make a Difference across an entire school. The 8 Conditions help educators ensure that the work they are already doing fosters an environment characterized by positive relationships, engaged learning, and sense of purpose. These online surveys take about 15 minutes to complete and provide survey administrators with real-time reports. By using the reports, teams of educators and pupils can work together to develop shared objectives and inspire meaningful improvements within their schools.
Based on more than two decades of research, the 8 Conditions That Make a Difference help educators ensure that the work they are already doing fosters an environment characterized by positive relationships, engaged learning, and sense of purpose. Students (and all other members of the school community) live out the 3 Guiding Principles through the 8 Conditions in the following ways:
GUIDING PRINCIPLE 1: SELF-WORTH
Feeling like you are a part of a group, while knowing you are special for who you are.
Having people who believe in you and are there for you when you need them.
Sense of Accomplishment
Being recognized for different types of success, including effort.
GUIDING PRINCIPLE 2: ENGAGEMENT
Fun & Excitement
Enjoying what you are doing whether at school, work, or play.
Curiosity & Creativity
Asking “Why?” and “Why not?” about the world around you.
Spirit of Adventure
Being excited to try new things, even if you don’t know that you will excel.
GUIDING PRINCIPLE 3: PURPOSE
Leadership & Responsibility
Making decisions and taking responsibility for your choices.
Confidence to Take Action
Setting goals and taking the steps you need to reach them.
